Enamel pins are made from an assortment of metals, usually iron or aluminum. We don’t know where the manufacturer sources their materials from. However from our research on the industry, most material is mined and purchased in bulk, reducing shipping and carbon costs from the supplier to the manufacturer.

It requires heavy machinery, skilled labor, and some serious heat to make enamel pins. Which is why most manufacturers require a minimum order of 100+ pins at a time. Every time you turn “the oven” on requires energy and time, which costs money. At the moment, all enamel pins are made in China.

Shipping from China to the US is quite the journey. Usually products are shipped via cargo ship, which uses much less oil per package than an airplane, reducing carbon emissions by quite a bit. The downside is dealing with pirates and the long time it takes to travel across an ocean.

We currently go through a middleman company that orders our pins for us from chinese manufacturers. Because we’re so new to the scene, our budget is precious, one huge miscommunication could end us quickly. This is an essential cost at our early stage, as we grow and can handle the financial costs of losing a huge order we can comfortably order products ourselves.

Each enamel pin is attached to a card for easy retail display, and to prevent a bunch of shuffling around for online orders. We opted for recycled or compostable products reducing our carbon costs for prettier packaging, but comes at a slight price increase. Ultimately most consumers judge a book by the cover and our packaging is our ‘book cover’ so to survive in this cut-throat society, we must look beautiful.

We didn’t expect shipping to cost as much as it does. Despite enamel pins being relatively small and lightweight, the USPS has a minimum shipping cost of around $2. Including the weight of the padded packaging it brings the cost to $3 for one pin. Most customers purchase more than 3 pins at a time, so this is an averaged cost, and helps cover some shipping issues like lost items.

In the US, sales tax is usually added during checkout. You think you’re spending $10, but you spend $11. It’s a bit shady, so despite what all marketing books tell you, we include tax in the retail price. Our pins may seem higher priced than most sites, but rest assured, it’s only because we don’t trick you at the last second and add sales tax at the end. We know 80%+ consumers would prefer to be tricked, but we just think honesty is the way to go.

This cost is often hidden from consumers. But in order to accept money online or physically from a source that isn’t cash, you have to go through a few tech companies and they all charge fees. VISA and MASTERCARD charge a fee, and then whatever tech company writing the code to handle that charges a fee too. For us that’s STRIPE, which charges 2.9% of the transaction + $.30. So in general the more you buy at time helps all stores pay less of this fee.

Each product we sell on our site supports a cause usually related to the product. We donate this at the end of each quarter to all the causes. Usually each product supports at least $1 going towards a cause.

Surprisingly it’s very cheap to offset the carbon produced for the entire cycle of a product. For us, one enamel pin from start to finish costs about 5kg of CO2. They usually last a lifetime or more if taken care of, but just incase, we offset double the CO2. It costs about $10 to offset 1000kg of CO2 (1 METRIC TON).
