[BLUE]

[BLUE] is a virtual pet simulator for 1 player. Goal is to make a 10-20 minute (mostly) card game with some soft legacy mechanisms that simulates taking care of a creature in a Tamagotchi™ -like device. After 6 plays your creature ‘retires’ and you can start anew.

Over 10 turns (5 days) the player will care of their virtual pet. The results of that care will change how the next week will be setup and approached.

 

[FRESH] SETUP

Pick a creature and gather its 3 cards. Put the egg into play.

Shuffle and set aside all 52 action cards. 

Flip all house tiles to the egg setup side.

(yada yada, the egg setup is different from the other 5 stages. Here you play 8 cards and move around a labyrinth, trying to earn suit tokens, and develop the personality of your new egg)

 

SETUP

Take the house tiles and lay out in order they’re stacked from left to right.

Take and shuffle what’s left of the action deck. (cards used in last session stay in the box this time)

Take the creature tuck box and unpack components. 

The 2 cards left in your hand last time, will start in your new hand. Setup based on bottom of both cards. Then draw 6 more cards from the action deck. 

Place you and your creature’s token in the bedroom. 

Put your creatures card next to the deck. (Be sure to use the next stage, each play will advance their stage. After <Senior> your creature retires. You’ll need to start fresh with a new creature. )

Shuffle the goal cards and place one out next to your creature card. (The goal card is what you’ll need to achieve success/failure this play.) (Goal cards will have values of each suit. You’ll commit 1 card each turn to each suit on the goal card. if you manage to reach the values of all 4 suits on the goal card, and your creature’s weekly goal, you’ll have a success)

I would like for the creature to earn suit tokens as you play, and you can choose to spend them to help you reach goals, but they’re one time uses. 

 

[PHASES 2-6] Play

Each ’round’ represents a day in the week. After 5 ‘days’ the session ends, and you pack your creature away for the weekend. 

Each day has 2 parts, a morning and an afternoon. 

At the beginning of every day, you draw a new weather/ai card. After your turn, your creature will do what the weather card says. 

At the beginning of Morning and Afternoon, you’ll pick a card from your hand and put it into play. You’ll commit it to one suit on the goal card and spend the remaining values on the card as action points. 

There are 4 actions;

  1. Clean
  2. Push
  3. Coach
  4. Grow

(each action is assigned a suit, we’re using shapes/colors, I haven’t assigned them yet. Hoping red X ends up being poop clean, but we’ll see.)

Clean. Spend 1 clean to remove a poop from a room YOU are in. Put poop token in the garden. 

Push. Spend 1 push to move the Ball token from a room YOU are in, into an adjacent room. 

Coach. Spend 1 coach to add an obstacle on a space of your creature’s track in a room YOU are in. 

Grow. Spend 1 grow to advance 1 food to its next stage. (3 stages, seedling, plantling, ready) to plant a seedling, you need a poop in the garden. To move to a plantling, you need a seedling that has been in the garden overnight and a water in the garden. Water is added via weather cards. To move to a Ready Food, you need a plantling that has been in the garden overnight and room in the basket. the basket can hold up to 3 Foods at any given time. 

The weather/ai cards change the board state. After you take your turn and spend all your points, the weather/creature takes a turn. Do the actions on the Morning side of the card. Then after your second turn in the day, you’ll do the actions of the Afternoon side of the card.  

When it rains, water tokens are added to the garden. (1-3)

52x Action Cards (1-5 values)

18x Creature Cards (3x per creature, 6 stages, double sided)

18x Morning/Day Action Cards (ai/creature/weather actions)

20x Negative/Positive Cards (added after each session depending on how you played)

5x Location Tiles (house has a bedroom, play room, kitchen, gym, garden) (maybe more, I’m interested in being able to mix & match rooms)

??x Wood Tokens (Poops, Weights, Ball, Foods, Water, suits)

Card UI idea:

9 suit values on the left side. There are 4 ‘suits/actions’. On your turn you play a card, you commit 1 suit to your goals, the rest are used as action points. (for example, if you have 1 X, you can spend it to clean 1 poop)

After you spend all your points, you do the rest of the card from top to bottom. First you move your creature left or right x spaces. (You move 1 space to go to the next room. Your creatures takes about 3 moves to get to the next room) Then you deal with any effects, with the card above, if it were day 2 (out of 5) you would add 1 poop to Room 2. Then you do any action that doesn’t have a day requirement. In this case, you may move the YOU token 1 space. 

The bottom of the card is ignored unless it’s the final 2 cards in your hand at the end of the session. This relates to setup in your next session. Something like put a poop in Room 1 and 2 poops in room 3. 

Going to aim to pair it with the Pondus Kickstarter. So whenever that is. I like the idea of each Kickstarter being a pairing of a ‘big’ project and a ‘small’ project. I see [BLUE] ending up as a series of games eventually. but for it’s launch, considering it ‘small’.
